NZholiday.co.nz is a free reference site for New Zealand public holidays. It covers all 11 national public holidays from 2025 to 2028, with correct observed dates when a holiday falls on a weekend, plus all 20 regional anniversary days across New Zealand's provinces. No account required, no app to download, no ads buried in the data.
Why We Built It
New Zealand's public holiday system is more complicated than most people realise. There are 11 national holidays, but most employees also receive a regional anniversary day, bringing the practical total to 12. Several holidays follow floating date rules — Easter, King's Birthday, Labour Day and Matariki all fall on different dates each year. And when a holiday lands on a weekend, the observed weekday off isn't always obvious.
Most of the calendar tools we found either didn't cover regional anniversary days properly, used American date formats, or were buried in cluttered sites with ads competing for space with the actual information. We built NZholiday.co.nz to fix that — clean, fast, accurate, and focused entirely on New Zealand.
What the Site Does
The main page lets you view confirmed public holiday dates by year (2025 to 2028) and filter by region to show your specific anniversary day alongside the national holidays. Each holiday shows its actual date, the observed date if different, and a live countdown to the next upcoming holiday. You can download any individual holiday as an iCal file to add directly to your calendar.
The site also covers the rules behind the dates — how observed dates work, what Matariki is and why its date changes, the special cases for Southland, Canterbury and Hawke's Bay anniversary days, and what New Zealand employment law says about public holiday entitlements. If you want to understand the system, not just look up a date, the explainer and FAQ sections have you covered.
How We Source the Data
All national public holiday dates are sourced from the Holidays Act 2003 and cross-referenced against official Employment New Zealand guidance. Regional anniversary day dates are verified from government announcements and confirmed each year. Matariki dates are taken from Te Kāhui o Matariki's official recommendations, which are legislated by Order in Council.
We review and update dates annually. If you spot an error, please get in touch — we want the data to be right.
